Innovation Clusters - Why they don't work

Innovation ClustersHere is an interesting article about "How to make a region innovative"  by Strategy+Business portal of Booz & Company. Why am I writing about this? well, because there is all this talk about Innovation Clusters in Iceland around Geothermal Energy, Seafood etc In My Humble Opinion (IMHO), it is a waste of time! this is old school thinking that never works. Don't take my word for it go and read the article. I am not the only one who thinks this way, there is a need for new thinking on innovation and entrepreneurship all around the world so how does not go about creating this new value i.e new equity. We are here because over indulgence in Debt has basically eaten away all the equity in the world. I am sure we all can agree that is the case in Iceland, but more and more countries are starting to feel the pain of this... hello! have you seen the news about Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal... and the USA? So, here is a thought start hyper growth companies that can innovate at the speed of the internet and it can be done only by small teams because of chemistry, mechanics, change management etc. There is enough evidence to support Bigger a company gets the smaller is their rate of innovation, I am sure there are exceptions to this, but the majority of large companies fall into What Clay Christensen calls the Innovators Dilemma. If you have not read the book I highly recommend it. The only way to innovate out of crisis is to start small, start at the grass root and change the entire paradigm of thinking and radically make traditional businesses obsolete. There is only one sector that is good at this at the the Startup Nation! Actually I would go one step further and say... you better be thinking about a Startup Of You, no wait Reid Hoffman of LinkedIn just wrote a book with that title. People these days, always stealing ideas :) just kidding. Go and read that book it is fascinating to think about the fundamental changes that are happening right in front of our eyes, but you need to be aware to see or suddenly you become obsolete. Are you getting obsolete?

Bill Gross @Idealabs

Bill Gross
Bill Gross (Photo credit: jdlasica)
To get a thumbs up for innovation from Bill Gates is nothing to sneeze about. Bill Gross has done just that. Bill Gates just wrote a note about Bill Gross in his Gates Notes. I have been following Bill Gross for as long time now. He is the quintessential ideas guy, he has been doing this since he was a teenager. I wish we had role models like him in India. We were taught that working for the Government was the best job one could get. I still remember my mother urging me to take up a job with the Indian Railways and how that would secure my future with at easy 9 to 4 job! what a concept! anyways, I digress. This post is about Innovation and how to make it sustainable and solve big problems because that is what Bill Gross has created in Idea Labs. There are 5 key things that he outlines in the video and so does Bill Gates. How can we create an environment that fosters these things?

  1. Embrace failure as learning: Employees don't fear loosing their job if an idea does not work - it allows them to take risk
  2. Bold Ideas are important, but they can fail: Try bold things that have a high chance of not working, its still learning
  3. The market place is not always ready for a new idea: Old ideas that are shelved can come back if a market has changed
  4. Go places where others are too afraid to venture: Get excited about things that are in the white space of what others won't do - the best ideas come at this intersection
  5. Analyze, Assess and Move on: It takes a dissection of the strengths and weaknesses of all systems, coupled with statistical analysis, to quickly cancel out the ideas that won't work, in order to land on a completely new idea.

Disruption in Education

Education is one of the most valuable bequeaths that we can pass along to our next generation. It was hammered into my head when I was growing up that there is only one way out of poverty and that is education. I am doing ok following that advice, what is exciting to me with the advent of the internet is that education is no longer confined behind the walls of an institute. There are disruptions happening that could fundamentally change the dynamics of competitive advantage, productivity, understanding and knowledge dissemination in the entire world. I signed up with Khan Academy yesterday and watched about 40 minutes of Python Programming videos, I have to admit I have done my stint with coding and I am a geek. I thought the instructions were very clear, and I actually felt like I relearnt a lot of the basics very quickly. I think what Sal Khan is doing is fascinating and he is really defining his legacy. This is by no means an advertisement for Khan Academy, but the number of videos that is available in the library is close to 2800 thats a lot of learning in various subjects. I am going to continue my learning in the Python Programming and anything else that I want to learn. The freedom to choose your learning by watching a good teacher is a great motivator, it gives you confidence and the of course the learning. So, what are you going to learn?

Pivot table of list of innovative companies in Iceland

Created a list of innovative companies that was part of my original post on Innovation in Iceland. I did some classifications and created a pivot table in Google docs. You can find the Google document here. Of the 162 companies in the list, I was able to classify 133 companies and over 50% of the companies are in the broad classification of Software or Software Consulting. As I had mentioned in my previous post this list was not meant to be an exhaustive list but more a working list. I would like your help in completing the same. If you know any companies that I have missed in this list please share it with me by updating this form and I will update the list. Gives more data to support why I believe software is going to eat fish and aluminium in Iceland. Here is the Pivot table

Startup Ideas - why ideas are not the problem!

Startup.com
Image via Wikipedia
Techcruch has an article about "What startup to build?", it is a good thought process on how to get started. In that article there is a reference to YCombinator's founder Paul Graham's 30 ideas that Y-Combinator will invest in. If you want to start something and you have the right skillset or a team take my word just pick one of the problems in that list and build something to solve it or read Tim Ferris's blog posts about how to create a million dollar business, follow his steps and get started. Most of the startup ideas and business plans that I come across seem to me like a solution searching for a problem to solve. That is precisely the wrong way to get started. As Brad Feld wrote about the 3 "I"s - Innovator, Imitator and Idiots, Be an Innovator and not the other two. Seth Levin and a lot of other VCs have written about Ideas, Ideas don't mean a hill of beans. Anyone can sit down and jot down 10 ideas for a startup, that has never been the problem. The problem is always how do you make it happen? how do you form the team with the right skillset, motivation and drive to execute on that idea? it is much harder than you think. There is a reason why people keep saying that startups are risky, of course they are risky... the risk does not come from the idea, it comes from the lack of market, skill, focus, persistence, drive and execution discipline.

The Power of the Mind

Lance Armstrong at the team presentation of th...
Image via Wikipedia
Interesting article on things we already know about our Mind can help us deal with the challenges that we face in our lives. I can relate to most of the items given in the article especially the one about visualization and also changing your thoughts by just smiling etc. My brother-in-law Sigfus is an Olympic Silver Medalist and I used to train with another Olympian. World class athletes use visualization a lot and I know this for a fact. I have heard Sigfus talk about how the Icelandic Handball team used to visualize the entire game before they even walked out of the dressing room during the Beijing Olympics. I guess what great coaches can help you do is help you visualize and picture the end state. I think everyone can do this, I am reminded by an inspirational video that I saw where the quote said "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure"... here is that video it is very inspirational to me.

Innovation in Iceland

I wrote a report on innovation in Iceland where I cataloged all the companies that were innovating in their domain. This report was suppose to be comprehensive but there are many new companies being formed so it is not meant to be a running list. The table of contents for the report is:

1.    Why Iceland was ranked as #1 in Innovation?

2.    Seleted list of innovative icelandic companies
                           i.   Internet, Software and Mobile
                           ii.  Gaming
iii. Renewable Energy, Energy Usage and Energy Efficiency
                           iv. Health and Wellness
                           v.  Food, Fisheries and Seafood
                           vi. Business Process and Engineering

3.    Description of the companies and the problem they solve

4.    Ideas on future development

5.    Appendix A - Comprehensive List of Innovative Icelandic Companies

If anyone is interested email me through the comments and I can send you a copy. There are many innovative things that fascinate me in Iceland starting with the public engagement in governance in the city of Reykjavik to the actual writing of the Icelandic constitution through an open source and crowd sourced methodology. To incorporating large scale brain storming to get consensus on important issues.

Increase in taxes = investment or social security benefit?

It is not the most popular thing to say but there it is I have said it. Taxes are not bad and the current tax system in Iceland is a cause of debate when I talk to many Icelanders. I don't want to whine about it, I just want to get on with creating great companies who don't care about the tax regime as they make enough money and more to pay for them. What we should be asking is how are the taxes being utilized. All Icelanders whom I speak to say that droves of Icelanders will leave the country because of the tax regime, I don't believe that. This post is by no means in support of the current government in Iceland or for that matter any government. I think everyone has to do a cost benefit analysis to live in a society, and I believe the benefits of living in Iceland far out weigh the costs in my personal analysis. Yes, taxes and cost of living is high, but so is the standard of living. I think one of the least talked about competitive advantages in Iceland is the amount of time one has here. I can have a fully productive 9 hour day and get all my chores done and be home by 17:30. I have lived in Houston, worked quite a bit in Silicon Valley and NYC believe me there is no way I can get this much done and have time for myself.

I did an analysis of the Government expenses as a percentage of GDP in Iceland, if you have not used the data that is published by Statistics Iceland, I highly recommend you do. If you see the trend it is quite clear where all the new tax rises are going it is being used to pay Households (34% increase from 2008) and for Social Security benefit (31% increase since 2008). I am not a big believe in the social benefit society or entitlement society but that is where the big increases are since the financial collapse in 2008. Another item that should be troubling is the increase in the purchases by the government. Who audits the Government? Are the purchases justifiable? What are we spending on Social Security benefits? these are the questions that Iceland should be asking its government not why are the taxes so high.

if you are interested in viewing the data and the graphs you can find it here

Strategy execution - Reboot Iceland

I have written about My vision for Iceland and why some of the current strategies being explored in Iceland will not work. How do we restart the entrepreneurial system? I have been doing a lot of thinking about this since I started working with Entrepreneurs in Iceland. So what do Icelandic entrepreneurs need?

  1. They need organized Seed/Angel investors and capital to help them through the valley of death
  2. They need active Mentoring
  3. They need a bridge to a bigger market
I have been making the rounds trying to convince institutions in Iceland that in order to reboot Iceland we need new companies that are solving the problems of the future. We need an active privately funded Venture Capital company that helps entrepreneurs through the above stated 3 challenges. I have been working with the two incubators in Iceland Innovit and Klak, to partner with and launch a Tech Stars model through them. The biggest problem has been making people/institutions believe that something like this can be done here in Iceland. So what is new? every entrepreneurs goes through many nay sayers until the nay sayers are wrong.

The private VC company will fund the running of the Tech Stars program, and will fund 10 startups each year for a period of 3 intense months of mentoring, training and getting their idea formulated into a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) or an invest-able business plan. At the end of the 3 months, each company will pitch to an audience of accredited investors and get funded.

Why Tech Stars? I believe it has the right ingredients for making this model work in Iceland. Tech Star is a mentorship driven accelerator that brings the local community into the fold. The track record of companies coming out of the Tech Stars program is incredible and odds defying. The mentors are volunteers and they are solicited based on their experience, success and on being entrepreneurs. I have spoken to a bunch of people in Iceland who qualify to play the role of mentors and most of them have shown a lot of interest to participate. A Tech Star affiliated program provides the network needed to bridge the gap from Iceland to the rest of the world and the company will also have a stamp of approval to the VC community at large.

Here is the presentation that I had made about why a VC company in Iceland would work.

Project Genesis

Coat of arms of IcelandImage via Wikipedia

Project Genesis is an initiative to establish a $50 million venture capital fund in Iceland focusing on innovation in specific field where there is a unique social, biological, ecological, environmental and geographical advantage. For example, Icelanders are ranked 3rd in the world for life expectancy by the United Nations and Iceland employs renewable energy to power the entire country. Both we feel are social, ecological, environmental and geographical advantages of Iceland.

Our initiative is to invest in the ideas, leaders, people and teams by finding entreprenuers who are trying to create valuable solutions for the Global market from these unique advantages inherent in the country. Iceland is a fertile ground for venture investments. The advent of the financial crisis has created several opportunities for investment in Iceland. There has been no point in time than now where Icelanders have had to reinvent themselves more rapidly and broadly, this we feel provides a unique opportunity as well as timing. With the young demography and the affinity of icelanders to live in this island, we believe will motivate the population to find new ways to solve issues that are global in nature.

History has been good to Iceland, Icelanders transformed themselves from one of the poorest nations in the Nordic region to one of the richest in less than half a century. They acheived this by utilizing the resources, namely fish, geothermal and hydro energy that were available in their natural environment and through innovation. If we extrapolate this to the new Iceland which has one of the best infrastructures in the world, abundant renewable energy and highly educated workforce, what can be created can be as broad as our imagination.

The fund will focus on all areas where there is a unique advantage in Iceland. The goal of the fund will be to look at the next phase of technology, information and renewable energy usage, expanding the value chain of renewable energy usage. All products and services produced in Iceland use renewable energy sources, which means all of these end-products are Carbon Neutral. We believe that there is demand for products and services that are produced using renewable energy and this trend is going to grow. The energy utilized in Iceland to make these products and services are one of the cheapest in the world. In addition, energy remains one of the most volatile factor inputs in the production process since oil became the energy source of choice. We believe that products and services produced from renewable sources will have stable factor cost and thereby enabling pricing that is corresponding to the value of the product and not driven by the price of fossible based fuels.

The typical timeframe of investment for the fund is 7 years. The goal of the fund would be to provide active mentoring and leadership to its portfolio companies in the areas of business strategy, internationalization, product and service development, branding, marketing, legal, financial and operational process development. The fund will run an active 3 month long business accelerator centre for entrepreneurs. The accelerator will be very selective, top 0.5% of business plans will be accepted into the program. These companies get up to $18,000 in seed funding, three months of intensive top-notch mentorship, and the chance to pitch to angel investors and venture capitalists at the end of the program. The fund will be given a 6% equity by the companies that are selected by the accelerator program. The accelerator will solicit the support of successful entrepreneurs across the globe and bring a world class mentorship program to Iceland where typical startup and business development challenges are solved faster by tapping the vast resource of knowledgable Zen Masters of business. The intention of active mentorship is to enable entrepreneurs do more things faster. We believe that with the current state of technology and communication, world class companies can be built faster. Facebook and Twitter did not exist 10 years back, Google did not exist 15 years back. We rest our case!

The fund would provide returns to its limited partners in 3 ways, (i) Initial Public Offering (IPO) of its portfolio companies, (ii) portfolio company acquired at a higher valuation by another company and/or (iii) the portfolio company transforms into a well run dividend paying company. Venture Capital funds have a unique investment return profile, our fund will aspire to multiply the investment in our portfolio companies many times over and our philiosphy of investing is not anchored on exit. We believe in patient capital as world class products and services take time to build but we believe we can squeeze more juice out of this time with the right platform.
