#BMD - Value Proposition

BMD-ValueProposition[original post written @startupiceland.wordpress.com]
This is the first of the posts on Business Model Design. The topic this post will cover is Value Proposition, it is one of the boxes in the Business Model Canvas. In my opinion defining the Value Proposition is one of the fundamental blocks in building any business. The definition of value has to be clear. Lets consider the example of Auro Investment Partners aka Startup Iceland. When I embarked on this journey almost 3 years back the value I wanted to create was to enable entrepreneurs to achieve their highest potential and goals. Although the fundamental definition has not changed, what is valuable has changed depending on the lifecycle and stage an entrepreneur or the company that we work with is in. Alexander Osterwalder in the Canvas asks fundamental questions that we need to take the time to answer: What value do we deliver to our customers?
We deliver speed in capital decision, know-how, networking and physical presence into the US and Indian markets, mentoring and experience in starting, building and scaling companies in the technology and the hospitality business. Characteristic addressed: Speed, Performance, Risk Reduction, Customization, "Getting the job done",
Which one of our customers problems are we helping to solve?
At the initial phase it is providing the seed and angel funding, followed up with mentoring, advising and help in building  the team, a network and large markets of US, Europe and India. Characteristic addressed: Performance, Risk Reduction, Customization, "Getting the job done", Cost Reduction
What bundle of products or services are we offering to each Customer Segment?
Our customer segment is broken down into Entrepreneurs in the technology space and Entrepreneurs in the hospitality space. For the customers in the technology space, we provide validation of the business model hypothesis, marketing and sales strategy, operational know how, team building know how and developing the market and customer know how. In the hospitality sector we bring vast experience in developing, managing and running hotels. In addition, we bring experience in advising investors in investing in hospitality business. Characteristic addressed: Customization, Risk Reduction, Performance, "Getting the job done", Cost Reduction
Which customer needs are we satisfying?
We satisfy the need for early stage capital, mentoring and network development to validate product market fit. We try very hard to build relationships and partnerships that are driven by the principle of win-win. We want to understand and provide value for Entrepreneurs in the entire gamut of business development. We understand it is our previlage to have the opportunity to work with Entrepreneurs and not the other way around.  We want the entrepreneurs who work with us to see the value we bring to the table, if we are unable to justify the value we simply don't waste the entrepreneurs time. We believe we need to be evaluated the same way as we evaluate the teams and entrepreneurs we work with.

Bill Gross @Idealabs

Bill Gross
Bill Gross (Photo credit: jdlasica)
To get a thumbs up for innovation from Bill Gates is nothing to sneeze about. Bill Gross has done just that. Bill Gates just wrote a note about Bill Gross in his Gates Notes. I have been following Bill Gross for as long time now. He is the quintessential ideas guy, he has been doing this since he was a teenager. I wish we had role models like him in India. We were taught that working for the Government was the best job one could get. I still remember my mother urging me to take up a job with the Indian Railways and how that would secure my future with at easy 9 to 4 job! what a concept! anyways, I digress. This post is about Innovation and how to make it sustainable and solve big problems because that is what Bill Gross has created in Idea Labs. There are 5 key things that he outlines in the video and so does Bill Gates. How can we create an environment that fosters these things?

  1. Embrace failure as learning: Employees don't fear loosing their job if an idea does not work - it allows them to take risk
  2. Bold Ideas are important, but they can fail: Try bold things that have a high chance of not working, its still learning
  3. The market place is not always ready for a new idea: Old ideas that are shelved can come back if a market has changed
  4. Go places where others are too afraid to venture: Get excited about things that are in the white space of what others won't do - the best ideas come at this intersection
  5. Analyze, Assess and Move on: It takes a dissection of the strengths and weaknesses of all systems, coupled with statistical analysis, to quickly cancel out the ideas that won't work, in order to land on a completely new idea.

Validated Learning in Hospitality Development

I will be speaking in the "Ferðaþjónusta og fjárfestingar" conference sponsored by Landsbanki and the Ministry of Industry, Iceland and organized by Promote Iceland. The words in Icelandic mean "Tourism and Investment" thank you Google Translate. I wrote about it when I got invited. The message of the presentation is "Apply the Lean Startup principles even before launching a hospitality development project". Especially validated learning, Google Insight for Search is a fantastic tool that I have been using for all our projects. I highly recommend that you do too. It can give you insights on anything that you are working on or plan to work on.

When we embarked on this journey to develop our presence outside of India in 2009, we wanted to build a scale able business which means we build teams around specific themes that we wanted to invest in. What we believe works well in Hospitality development is vertical integration of the value chain. What do I mean by this? Our company in India whose core business is to invest, develop and manage Hospitality projects owns a number of support businesses
  1. Furniture Manufacturing and distribution company specifically to serve our Hotel developments
  2. Food and Beverages distribution company that supplies our hotels
  3. Food Service business that runs all our restaurants in our properties
  4. A Taxi service company that runs a fleet of cars for all our properties
All our investments outside of India are in businesses that move up the value chain of Hotel development
  1. Buuteeq - A Digital Marketing system for Independent hotels (selling rooms)
  2. Clara - A Community analysis company for the gaming industry (to understand future buying trends)
  3. Boutique brand - A new boutique brand that is truly international and can be applied to any geography
  4. Hotel interior design company - A company that designs high end interiors for hotels and private residences
  5. Furniture distribution company - A platform to sell the furniture manufactured in India

Entrepreneurs are everywhere - My Inspiration!

Ajay Chaturvedi is a good friend of mine from my university days in Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani. Check out the coverage of what he is doing in India, he is a true inspiration to all of us. We can make a difference if we put our mind into it. What he is doing is a fantastic example of my philosophy that Entrepreneurs are everywhere and one does not have to create the next Facebook or Google to be an entrepreneur. We all can follow our passion and change the world. Whats your passion? How are you changing your world?

Good Rules

Paul Romer talks about building cities in places like Africa using the same model as was done in Hong Kong and Singapure. Interesting talk, I think the important element that he touches on is Good Rules. Characteristics of good rules are that it gives choices for all stakeholders. Of course when you simplify the problem it makes a lot of sense but the real challenge is you need leaders and politicians who see beyond their personal gains to incorporate things like this. Some places in the world have been lucky, but others are kept under a regime that really don´t want to change. But I think it is an interesting idea and could generate enough momentum if more people see the value. China and India have implemented the concept of Special Economic Zones, where there are choices for people as well as leaders to develop the region.

I am a Slumdog!

Lets get this straight... being a slumdog is probably only derogatory in India and to the India fascists and hypocrites. Whats wrong is being a slumdog? No one chooses to be in a slum or go through the struggles of living in a slum. It is extremely easy for those on one side of the shore to romanticize or dismiss the other.

Let me be honest, I don´t know what it is to live in a slum but I have lived most of life being next to Slums while in Chennai, Mumbai or Delhi. I even had friends in the slums while I was maybe 10 years old and was fasinated to fly kites and the kids from the slums were the most resourceful and I made friends with them. I still remember those wonderful summers when I was flying kites with my friends. I did not regard them in any lowly manner. I don´t know what happened to those kids but I don´t think there was any thing different from the way they looked at life than what I did at that time. Maybe my family and parents had resources to direct my faculty towards education. I don´t think it was the fault of those kids that they did not aspire to be different. Actually, I should apologize for the previous sentence because for all that I know those kids might have made something of themselves.

Everyone´s life has struggles and challenges... nothing is easy and maybe there are some lucky ones who had it easy. I believe I was one of those lucky blokes, although I believe that I worked hard to be who I am today or what I aspire to be. What am I trying to get to... well, lets not get hung up with the word "Slumdog" it is the thought that goes into the one who is reading those words that needs review. As long as we treat people with respect and allow everyone to have dignity irrespective of where they live or where they are from I think we might live to see a better or brighter day for this world especially in India.

The more I observe the society here in India, I have to change my perception... I believed that Cast and the Cast system in India was dead, I could not be more wrong about this. The cast system has evolved like everything else... now the cast is not based on your origin, it is based on how much money you have, what car you drive or what kind of clothes you wear. So in one way the traditional cast system is dead but it has given birth to a more sinister kind of system. It does not matter how you accumulate wealth as long as you are moving up the economic hierarchy.

I have hope in the new generation, the young 500 million or so who are below the ages of 25 as they will wash the sins of our past. In addition, the generation that built this new cast are probably dead by the time the new generation takes over. Majority of them have access to resources and wealth effect is actully seeping into the society and I am waiting for this generation to break free... and they will.

Jai Ho!!!

I am not the only one who thinks this way please see Mr. Nandan Nilekani´s post about the Slumdog movie... here is a excerpt that I thought was very insightful...

"The movie is at its heart, about aspiration, and about dreams coming true. This ‘common man’ Jamal, is not angry, like the Indian men of the 1970s. He is both hopeful and relentless, defiant and proud of his origins even as the people around him call him a ’slumdog’. He knows better - that it doesn’t matter where you come from, only where you are headed."

India - New adventure in 2008

It is official today, We as a family are moving to India by July 2008. I have been asked to head Glitnir´s India office. I personally feel like I have come a full circle, I started my career working in India near Mumbai and now I am heading back to once again start a new chapter in my career.

Of course, I would not have accepted this role without the support and encouragement of Agusta, my wife. We are excited and scared and all the the things that you would go through when you are starting out on an adventure. I felt it when I moved to Iceland, it has been the best decision of my life so far and I feel this one is going to better it. Atleast my wife and I feel that it will be.

We will be based out of Mumbai. I feel very privileged and proud to be able to go back home, where a fundamental transformation is taking place. I think if one looks back at history things like this take centuries to happen and the last transformation was the Industrial Revolution.

Big day for me...

It was a big day for me as Glitnir signed a Memorandum of Understanding with LNJ Bhilwara Group in India yesterday. I signed the agreement for Glitnir in the presence of HE P Chidambaram, Finance Minister of India and HE Arni Mathieson, Finance Minister of Iceland.

We have agreed to jointly explore Geothermal sources in India to develop a pilot project to do district heating or develop a plant with 1MW to 5MW capacity. If we are successful, this will be the first Geothermal power plant in India.
The news has been covered in all major sources... here are some links

Empire Strikes Back- IMHO* Its more like Return of the Jedi

Guardian in UK writes that Tata Steel in rumours of taking over Corus in UK with a headline "Empire strikes back: India forges new steel alliance", in my humble opinion (IMHO) this is more like "The Return of the Jedi". The UK and European media has been rather critical of Indian entreprenuers expanding in the west... Do I need to say more, there have been all kind of legislative barriers put to stop Laxmi Mittals efforts to expand. I think if Indian companies think they can buy and run a profitable organization globally they should be allowed to do that. Globalization goes both ways, it is not the West that is conquring the East it is both ways, the playing field has been levelled and that is why we see a lot more news about Infosys, Lenovo etc of late... I say power to all and let the markets decide who is creating better value and wealth for the consumer!

BeyondVC: Globalization and the world economy

BeyondVC: Globalization and the world economy Ed writes about Globalization, Off-shoring and the equilibrium shift from the US to China and India in the coming years with regard to GDP output, growth and interestingly number of students entering science and engineering colleages. He argues that right now the quality of a student with Science and Engineering degree from India or China is below that of the one from a US university... I don´t agree with that but never-the-less, he says that India and China will catch up and US should do whatever to boost its competitive advantage.

It was interesting to note that he got this from Greg Mankiw´s blog, which I read as well :) so I am probably in good company linking to these guys.

Anyway coming back to the discussion of quality of students... I think the quality is dependent on how the output is utilized until now the utilization in India (which I can talk about, as I went to school in one of the Indian universities) has not been tapped comprehensively, when the opportunities to innovate and actually drive value comes to India and China... the competitive advantage that is held by the US will be leveled.

Making India a hub of venture capital | CNET News.com

Making India a hub of venture capital CNET News.com, as I wrote in my earlier post India is undergoing some rapid change and development. The article above describes the flow of Venture Capital funds into India, it has increased 400% to $3.6 billion. I personally think India will beat China in this funds race due to the Indian governments great strides in establishing Intellectual Property.
